She's Got Papers on Me Richard 'Dimples' Fields (March 21, 1941 - January 12, 2000) was an American soul singer popular during the 1980s. Sources differ as to whether he was born in New Orleans, Louisiana or San Francisco, California. Fields’ breakthrough LP from 1981 – a showcase for his voice (and personality!) with R&B hits like “I’ve Got To Learn To Say No!” and “Earth Angel,” plus the timeless soul lament “She’s Got Papers On Me” featuring the clean-up woman Betty Wright!

Listening to Richard Dimples Fields' forlorn ballad 'She's Got Papers on Me' is like watching a daytime soap opera. The song's characters and the lyrics' theme are that well-designed. Its slow loping, 'crying' strings-laced feel elicits the feel of a sweeping soap opera-ish melodrama. Only issued as a promotional single from the Dimples LP (the single was never available to the buying public; possibly an effort to boast album sales), 'She's Got Papers on Me' enjoyed massive radio and club play. Near the closing minutes, the singer loses his dapper cool and begins an impassioned riff that spells out his pain. Betty Wright's biting tirade rips into Mr. Look So Good! (both a nickname for Fields and the title of one of his LPs) that's, on closer examination, an expression of her own pain. Even though Fields' biggest hits were 'If It Ain't One Thing Its Another' (number one R&B/number 47 pop), a cover of Aaron Neville's 'Tell It Like It Is' (number 22 R&B), 'Taking Applications,' 'People Treat You Funky (When Ya Ain't Got No Money!),' and 'Your Wife Is Cheatin' on Us' (all Top 40 R&B), many folks will always remember him as the somewhat sympathetic (or, depending on your view, pathetic) character he performed in 'She's Got Papers on Me.' Barbara Mason's 'answer record,' 'She's Got the Papers (But I Got the Man),' was a 1981 Top 30 R&B hit. The Dimples LP hit number five R&B and number 33 pop in summer 1981. It was reissued as She's Got Papers on Me on April 24, 2001.
